Ok so my dad suffered a stroke about 2 years ago. The cause was basically everything. Alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, etc. Prior to the stroke he was an alcoholic. A bad one. I would come home from school at 3pm and he would already be slurring his words and stumbling around. After the stroke he was a lot better. My family started calling the stroke a miracle because he recovered pretty fast, got a lot nicer, and his alcohol consumption was extremely low. I know that stroke victims should never drink alcohol because it raises the risk of another stroke, but one of his doctors said he could have a little bit of beer every now and then. He was sad all the time so, to make him happy, my mom started buying him tiny beers that he could have a couple times a week and she kept it super regulated. Once he got clearance to drive again, however; he was going to the liquor store every day and buying tequila as usual. He's been telling us a lot lately that he wants to get sober. He's attended multiple AA meetings and has had a few talks with doctors about rehab. He even started taking pills to reduce the alcohol cravings. But nothing works. And his brain was damaged from the stroke so he doesn't understand that this is hurting his whole family and we can't get through to him. We've tried hiding his keys and he gets "friends" to pick him up. We've tried not giving him any money and he cashes out money from banks. We don't know what to do and all of us are absolutely terrified that he's going to kill himself from all the alcohol. I think he really does want help, but he just doesn't understand how to accept it. We can't put him in a rehab center because if he checks himself out the bill would be on my Mom and she can barely pay his medical bills let alone rehab bills. I love my dad so much even through all the shit he's put my family through and I can't imagine getting another call that he's had a stroke. And if he does, it will most likely be fatal. We think it could be his way of coping with post stroke depression. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help him? I'm praying for an answer. I want him to be healthy and happy and it just seems so hopeless at this point. Thank you so much for taking your time to read this. I truly appreciate any help you can give me.
