I have been in the military for 5 years and I am reaching the age I need to choose a career. So I can either retire in the military for a minimum of 15 more years or go back home and join the fire department and retire in about 17-18 more years. It is a hard choice since they both are physically demanding and I would enjoy both. The difference is that I would that I would be located in once permanently if I go fire but if I stay in the military I’ll deploy and move around a lot. So finding a woman who is willing to move around and having family would be harder to sustain.. So the question I guess I am asking is if you were in my shoes, what would you choose?

What about your friends in the military?
Are any of them settling down while on the move, or is it really that tough?
Would you have to commit now for the full 15, or can you choose a shorter time?
My gut feeling is, that having had serious thoughts about settling down and having a family, the fire department sounds like the better bet, but only if you really are sure this is the time to make that decision.

Research the benefits-retirement, medical etc. also a firefighter s schedule is very difficult on a family, being gone a few days at a time. How old are you?
