I'm not sure how you define 'friend' - but for me, friendship requires affection, trust and respect.
M may - or may not - like you; maybe she was simply flattered by your crush. But she certainly doesn't respect you.
You may - or may not - like her. Hard to see why you would, but crushes can live long. But you certainly cannot trust her, and I'm not convinced you should respect someone who treats you like dirt for the fun of it. But that's up to you.
New Zealand is a long way away, and your trip is rather longer than the New York trip. No reason why you cannot be friendly, but take care.
